Influence of Managerial Style on Employee Behavior

Introduction

The author uses his interactions with the employees at resorts in Fiji to indirectly analyze the effect managers have on their employees. He conducts a very simple study by counting the number of bulas, a traditional Fijian greeting. He uses these numbers to judge the level of hospitality and relates this to the general attitude of the manager in charge. Both managers approach their work differently. Their styles of management affect how their employees treat their customers. This paper takes a closer look at the case study with respect to the affect managerial styles have on employee behavior.

Discussion

The author is extremely pleased with the hospitality he receives from employees at the first resort. He recalls receiving 39 traditional greetings from the 41 people he interacted with. With the exception of two people, he was shown great hospitality and felt welcome in his surroundings. The people seemed genuinely happy to meet him.

He met with the resort's manager and asked of the changes the manager had brought in to the resort. The manager replied by saying he changed absolutely nothing. Contrarily, he accepted the people and their culture, and tried to infuse it into the way the resort functioned. In doing so, the manager indirectly showed his appreciation for the locals and their traditions. A crucial move on his part, the locals and his staff did not fail to recognize the notion and this was portrayed in the way they dealt with customers.
