This is an important part of the study and will contribute greatly to the students' personal and vocational development. The programme is designed to encourage appropriate basics for independent and responsible behavior during work and to help the students experiencing the reality of the hospitality and/or hotel industry. An industrial placement will give you the chance for significant personal development, and improve your chances when applying for jobs in the future. We have staff dedicated to making sure you choose the right placement for your career requirements depending on your degree (Morgan 2000, pp. 1-6).
It is an academic requirement that students should successfully complete the placement in terms of duration and quality of performance. Students are required to have their working experience in either
A hotel, providing training in more than one department within the hotel or in one of the major operational departments,
Or different types of hotel and catering establishments with a view to get a contrasting experience.
Only a successful industrial practice in an approved establishment is valid for entering the final exam (in January 2013).
The Aims of the Industrial Placement
To reinforce the academic studies through exposure to and involvement within the operations of a functioning hotel or catering organization,
To provide the students with an opportunity to apply and extend their theoretical knowledge in practice giving a basis for further studies,
To provide opportunity for personal development and encourage vocational aspirations
One of the major educational reforms of the 1960s was the creation of Polytechnics in 1965, involving an amalgamation of around 50 technical and other colleges. Polytechnics unlike universities were the 'application of knowledge to solve issues'(Mogel 2002, pp. 5-15).
Finding Industrial Placements
Students will be placed in establishments in Hungary and/or in foreign countries. In order to develop necessary skills in finding searching jobs students are requested to find their own placement in consultation with the Office of Course Director (hereafter: Office). The students have to report the name and address of the work placement by giving his/her Confirmation of Acceptance to the Office latest on 15 Dec 2012. Without the endorsement from the Office the training cannot be started. Those students whose working experience will be organized by the School need not submit Confirmation of Acceptance (Millard 1987, pp. 20-25).
The School has established regular contacts with hotels, approved student exchange organizations such as Louis Hotel (based in Athens), Danubius Hotel Operation and Services Private Co. Ltd. (based in Budapest) and other organizations including the Hungarian Hotel Association, to arrange placements. It is suggested that students explore channels, opportunities at their own initiatives, e.g. in abroad (Mary 1999, pp. 568-568).
Duration
The total time of the practical training is 18 weeks (720 working hours, 40 working hours weekly, in accordance with the Hungarian Code of Labour). The period of employment falls between earliest the 01 July 2012until 15 January 2013. The precise dates may be agreed between student and employer (Herr 2004, pp. 15-29).
