The study will propose a program for health and safety development in industries and workplace. It will provide awareness with regards to health and safety for the workers working in the petroleum industry and facilitate in providing ways and interventions for the protection of the health of workers in the specified industry.

Wellbeing and health is important for every human being. People working in industries and factories often confront hazards and catastrophes that not only affects their health and wellbeing but also results in morbidity and mortality. It is important to foster industrial hygiene in industries for better health and protection. This is the responsibility of employers to implement programs that ensure the safety and protection of workers.

Industrial Hygiene

Industrial hygiene is a scientific discipline that is involved in predicting, identifying, assessing, communing and controlling of the factors that lead to environmental stresses in the workplace that can have an adverse effect on the health and well being of the workers in the organization. Industrial hygiene can be considered as an important mechanism that facilitates in protecting the health and well being of the workers against any catastrophe or hazards at the worksite.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

The objective of OSHA is to assure safe and healthful working conditions for people working in the industries. OSHA facilitates by setting and enforcing standards at the worksite and spreads awareness amongst workers and employees through training, education and support. OSHA is a part of the United States Department of Labor. OSHA act covers private sector employees and workers (OSHA, 2013).

OSHA Act has been formulated to develop and set obligatory industrial hygiene and health requirements in a workplace. These requirements are valid in more than 6 million workplaces in the country. OSHA depends on industrial hygienists to assay and evaluate the potential hazards and health risks in the workplace (OSHA, 2013).

Role of Industrial Hygienist

The industrial hygienists are vital resources for government, local emergency planning committees and private response organizations. They provide expertise related to health and safety (AIHA White Paper, 2009). The industrial hygienists develops and issues the OSHA standards for health and safety to ensure protection and safety of people against all the health hazards that are connected to chemical toxins, biological hazards and other harmful physical agents. They also provide technical assistance and support and set up field enforcement measures and issue industrial elucidations of OSHA standards (OSHA, 2013).
