Abstract

This paper is an attempt to review the literature and derive the importance of IHRM practices in bringing the performance of the firm competitive to others. Furthermore, this paper trough light on the importance of transformational leader and its effectiveness in changing the culture of an organization from knowledge based to learning, and finally innovative company. It has been argued that HR practices can significantly affect the performance of the firm in more than one way. HR practices can affect the performance of the firm directly and can also affect the business strategy. The business strategy in turn affects the performance of the firm. Furthermore the paper highlights the importance of leadership in today dynamic environment. The competition calls for innovative and creative solution before the competitors and take the advantage of it, which translates into business success. Transformational leaders can effectively convert or shift a knowledge based organization into a learning and finally into an innovative company. Innovative company fosters an environment where the employees feel important enough to push their ideas to the top level management; they start thinking beyond the obvious and bring in creative and novel solutions which were earlier neglected as being against the standard operating procedures. The right type of leadership can bring this culture in place and push the company beyond limits.

Context

The traditional tools and means of obtaining competitive advantages are becoming obsolete. The product technology is quickly out dated, accessible sources become widely available to others as well, at present these types of advantages rarely sustain. This has led the practitioners to find out new ways of gaining competitive advantages that can be sustained in today's dynamic environment. International Human Resource Management is responsible for the development of human resource, through recruiting, selecting, training, and appraising the employees in the organization (Lee et. al, 2010, pp.1357). Thereby it creates a large impact on the firm's performance. International Human Resource Management involves dealing with diversity and maintains the consistency in rules and regulations worldwide while giving the flexibility to the local management to adjust according to the environment. In this scenario the role of leadership gets doubled. Leaders can influence and direct the behaviour of the employees in organization. Transformational leaders can shift the culture of organization and make it more suitable to deal with the competitive environment. This paper is an attempt of evaluating the evidence in support of impact of HR practices on the firm's performance, and the evidence of impact that transformational leadership can have in shifting the culture of knowledge based organization to learning and finally to innovative company.
