I/O Psychology

Introduction

The paper presents the discussion on the theme of a movie which involves the counterproductive behaviors of workers at a restaurant. The name of the movie is 'Waiting' and it was released in the year 2005. This paper will implement the I/O psychology to the behavior of the waiters in the movie while focusing on the counterproductive working behavior.

The psychology of organization deals with the analysis of the interactions between the organization work and individual behavior. An individual person or employee is required to carry out a task within the organization. This task includes within it a number of variables that are influencing the implementation by the individual himself, the workload, the work environment, attitude towards work, the characteristics of the subject and his or her expectations towards the working environment etc.

All these aspects are needed to be kept in mind when working in an organization as they relate to the psychology of a human mind and nature. The movie revolves around the organizational psychology of various characters in which some share their problems with others who act as their counselor. On the other hand Dean leads his life without sharing his problems with others but struggling hard to improve it.

Discussion

Characters

The movie, 'Waiting', has many characters. The main character is of Dean who is a waiter at a restaurant. He left his studies after graduating from high school. When four years passed of his working at the restaurant, he learned through his mother that one of his classmates has completed his bachelor's in electrical engineering from a reputable university. Then, Dean realizes that he has a mission less life in which he is wasting himself. He had many co-workers at the restaurant and they all had their own problems and stories to tell. They spent their leisure time playing and gossiping about the customers. The problem is that they had no psychotherapist or counselor who could have helped them in coping up with their problems and release their stress. The I/O psychology can be applied in the movie situation. For this reason, initially, the I/O psychology has to be understood in detail.

It consists of an analysis of the selection criteria and preparation of employees, study and job assessment, dedication and job contentment, performance, organizational growth and the job conditions (Anderson et al., 2002).
