Hypervisor

Introduction

Hypervisor is an exclusive type of software that allows the organizations to run more than one OS (operating system), on a single computer. The process which supports this operation is called virtualization. This feature exists between the operating system and hardware and presents a virtual function of hardware to all the software, operating in the single machine (Guthrie & Lowe, 2013). The technology of hypervisor also manages the information flow between physical hardware, virtualized hardware and software. According to recent researches and studies, hypervisor can be used for both enterprise and customer settings. The technology of hypervisor allows the businesses and organizations to run one or more than one operating system simultaneously on a single computer (Heidari, 2007). Hypervisor finds its functions and application in various areas including migration, data centers, server consolidation, kernel debugging, securing platforms, testing etc. The main objective of hypervisor or virtual system is to get enhanced and improved utilization of resource (Portnoy, 2012).

Therefore, it may help the organizations, enterprises and businesses to minimize the cost of hardware. It is because of the reason that, it offers a single integrated platform which supports various independent and different resources. In several levels, the technology of hypervisor allows enterprises to improve and enhance the flexibility, administration, reliability, cost reduction and security of the system. This study incorporates the technical disadvantages and advantages of implementing hypervisor in an enterprise (Heidari, 2007). Furthermore, the study also discusses the comparison of hypervisor from Microsoft (Hyper-V), VMware (ESXi), and Hitachi's (Virtage). The impacts of hypervisor technology on the TCO (total cost of ownership) in an enterprise are also incorporated in the study. Moreover, the impacts of hypervisor implementation on the system administration are also discussed in the proceeding paper (Boursas, et.al., 2010).

Discussion

Hypervisor

In the current era of technology, hypervisor is one of the most effective and efficient technologies. It is because of the reason that, this technology enables the businesses and organizations to ensure the integrity of their business operations. Virtual machine monitor or hypervisor technology is nothing more than computer software, hardware or firmware that develops and runs virtual machines. Computer which supports the operations of one or more virtual machines is called 'host machine' (Portnoy, 2012). The configuration of hypervisor allows each operating system to assume that, it has the host's memory, processors and other resources all to itself. In precise words, hypervisor controls and manages the host resources and processors distributing the resources to each operating system. Furthermore, this distribution depends on the requirement of the system (Laan, 2013). Moreover, it also ensures that no operating system would disturb the operation of other operating system. Hence, the technology of hypervisor provides effective and efficient ways to the enterprises so that they can easily lineup their work procedures. The technical advantages and disadvantages of using hypervisor in an enterprise are elaborated in the proceeding discussion (Merrill &Hefferman, 2011).
