Introduction

This section will be summarizing the organizational context of the company mentioned in the case study, which is Crown Spa Hotel. It will also discuss the main themes mentioned in the case study. The hotel industry is hotel and leisure sector where Crown Spa Hotel is positioned. The departments constitute of bars/restaurants, sales, customer service and front-of house for which 126 employees are hired. The main human resource problem the hotel is facing is the absenteeism increase in employees due to the work related illness. Other problem the hotel faced was the work pressure in load and busy season. The main methods employed by the hotel for the solution of absenteeism were Bradford Factor Scoring System, online survey tool and back to work interview. Absenteeism was found to be caused by work-related illness and stress management. Organizations can no longer afford to assume that the health of employees is only a private matter. Health employees are an increasingly important issue and legitimate management. People's health is the health of the organization and health the company will be healthy profits and return on investment health is likely. While companies are increasingly concerned about hygiene and quality, occupational health should be taken into account with the same interest (Dessler, 2008).

Workplace absenteeism is very essential to the development of a business and why companies should pay attention to the absences. There are three reasons why the employer should be careful. First, absences have a negative effect on employees of the creative power of the company. It will break through the normal routine workouts and this adds to the costs. Second, disability is often associated with an evasive impairment of health. At last an increased absenteeism may well be an indication of a desolate environment in the company. By monitoring absenteeism can be diminished. Causes of absenteeism are manifoldness. On one hand, there is a real disease, or a situation-related absenteeism (Sparrow 2004, 65).

Bradford Factor Scoring System was used for the measure of sick absences from the employees. This method works with the weighting system. The absences or organization are given weights where high weights mean high absenteeism. The system helps the hotel to take actions against the absenteeism of the non-genuine reasons. This system is focused on short-time period only. The system can divert to long-term absenteeism easily. Another system used by the hotel is the absence management. This involves back to work interviews and comparisons of sick patterns. Back to work interviews involve interview sessions with employees when they come to work after having sick leaves. This makes the management build a sickness trend among employees. This enables the management know that the employees are fit and able to perform performance and quality work. Comparisons of sick patterns involve the sickness trend among departments. This makes the management have the understanding of health and well being. This method is not fully reliable.
