Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction

To understand process by which teachers come to integrate new technology into ir teaching practices, researcher undertook the yearlong investigation into new technology integration in curriculum of the Manchester Business School. The purpose of this research study was to investigate teachers' perceptions and experiences in adopting the new technology known as “Blackboard” Learning System (Release 6) as the case study in the Manchester Business School in Manchester.

The introduction of this new program in 2004 was significant, not only for teachers, but also for ir students. The new computer program has meant major changes to how subjects are taught and how students are assessed. The impact of the mandated change process on teachers within school, especially introduction and integration of new technology on direct users of that technology, was also investigated.

Purpose of Study

The purpose of this study is to look at impact of integration of “Blackboard” computer program on the group of teachers in one school. To furr understanding, this study investigated teachers' perceptions of new learning technology. The study focused specifically on teachers directly affected by change and factors that affected ir integration, or orwise, of new program. The study explored direct users' perceptions and experiences of program by interviewing m on three separate occasions prior to, during, and post implementation periods of program in 2004.

Background to Study

Historically, expectation has been that “ human being should and would adapt to demands of technology” (Mumford, 1979, p. 2). However, understanding how introduction and integration of new technology affects people should enable systems to be designed and implemented in such the way that system enhances work of user.

According to Taylor (1998), 1990s was the period of rapid change in workplace as organisations altered ir structures and embraced new management practices and styles. Alongside and closely connected with organisational changes were massive technological developments.

When considering change, it is important to understand what that change means for people directly affected by it, and what factors assist and/or hinder in adapting effectively to process of change. Bogdan and Biklen (1992) concur: change is complicated because beliefs, lifestyles, and behaviour come into conflict. Policy makers, for example, who try to change education, be it in the particular classroom or the whole system, seldom understand how people involved in change process think. Consequently, y are incapable to unquestionably foresee how participants will ...
