Introduction

It is a movie which is said to be released in the year of 2009 whereby there are 9 people who are trying to analyze the human behavior based on the relationships that they are in. All nine people are said to be dating or are friends of each other. Gigi lacks the capability reading people and hence is unable to read men who are on a date with her and she is in constant pursuit of hoping to find Mr. Right. She is adviced by Alex who is a bar owner by profession and is cynical of love but sweet. Ben and Janine are happily married but Ben meets Anna who is dating Connor Barry who is in love with her. Beth is dating Neil for 7 years but dumps him eventually since he isn't ready. Mary is an advertising agent who is in pursuit of love as well (imdb, 2009).

The focus of this essay is going to be on Gigi since she is apt when it comes to analyzing the interpersonal communication and different dyadic levels. When it comes to the social exchange theory it can be implemented based on the kind of movement that Gigi as an individual has. I will also discuss the types of communication skills that she makes use off in pursuit of love.

Discussion

When it comes to learning a lesson from the interpersonal communication it can be said that relational development cannot happen in one go and that it has various stages in between which needs to be developed and undergone for it to be strong. The stage includes:

Pre-interaction awareness

Acquaintance

Exploration

Intensification

Intimacy

Throughout the entire time span, there are turning points and it is based on the positive and the negative incidents and experiences that can aid in tarnishing or developing a relationship. Whenever there is a development of relationship, some time has been spent together along with physical contact, the relationship tends to intensify. The opposite is also possible that is when there is less sharing of information and physical contact. Gigi as a character is seen to undergo both the stages.

Gigi as an individual lacks effective interpersonal skills and hence has varying intensities of relationship. Gigi tends to skip the pre-interaction stages whenever she tries to form a relationship and directly enters into the acquaintance stage since she is inclined towards having a blind date. It is because of the blind dates that she is not able to have an initial perception which tends to have a lasting impact. She lightly deals with introductory stage whereby she tries to share personal information however it should be done in the exploration stage. In one of the scenes, Gigi states to her friend that she is about to go to a blind date and further states that she needs to mentally prepare herself and that she should avoid talking about her tooth issue.
