Studying for a degree

The number of students entering higher education has risen. According to R. Brooks and G. Everett, the percentage of young people studying in higher education in England and Wales has increased approximately sevenfold since the early 1960s, from only 6% of 19-20 year olds in 1961 to over 40% of this age group in 2004/05 (with a target of a 50% participation rate by 2010). This expansion of higher education has been replicated in many other areas of the world. For example, in Australia, the number of students enrolled in higher education increased by 51% between 1996 and 2005 (Department of Education, Science and training, 2007). Indeed, research conducted amongst young people in Australia states that “Many young people now know how vital higher education is for their future career. (Dwyer & Wynn, 2001). The majority of young people are now studying hard at University in order to have a better future and career. “

Currently, the percentage of the population with a degree all over the world is rising steadily.  It has come to a point where a university degree does not really distinguish you from the rest of the crowd.  Some degrees like engineering and medicine for instance are still quite valuable.  

Having the word 'degree' written on a CV is really vital. There are so many advantages and disadvantages of studying for a degree at the university. Some of the benefits of studying for a degree in a university include getting better qualifications, which enable you to get a better job.  More people can get a better job, with more opportunities available, after achieving a degree than people who aren't graduates.  In addition, some people doing a degree course in the Arts or Sports can progress into the creative arts or sports industry as professionals and skilled individuals. People studying literature may end up as writers, while those studying journalism may find better opportunities to work as journalists and so on.

Furthermore, many graduates are more likely to have a better financial future and have the opportunity to explore lots of different interests.  Also, they will be able to make new friends with like-minded people who want to experience university life to gain better prospects.  During the course of their education, they interact with their class fellows and increase their social circle. This may benefit them in the future in case any of their class mates lands up with a good company. The help of that class fellow can be utilized by them in gaining a position in that same company for themselves.

Studying at university is a good experience and graduates can go on to become a good model for other young children to follow. Academic life brings with itself a lot of excitement and confusion.
