Multicultural Organization - Globalization & Diversity

Multiculturalism is a term that refers to pluralism, inclusiveness, and respect for diversity in an organization. So, in an actual multicultural workplace the culture of an organization supports as well as communicates the core values that empower as well as respect a complete diversity of its employees (Sears, Sears, & Clough, 2010). According to Ricky W. Griffin (2012), the multicultural is one of those workplaces that have accomplished large extent of diversity, are capable of completely capitalize on the benefits associated with diversity, and have less issues related to diversity. Thus, these definitions of multiculturalism or multicultural organization clearly make it apparent that diversity holds an immense place in multicultural organization i.e. organization fully recognizes the significance and role of diversity of its workers and empowers it as well as maintain it while having less diversity issues.

Throughout the decade, diversity has been increasing on rapid pace all around the world. The major reason behind increasing diversity of employees is globalization, since it has contributed a lot in diversifying the organizations in terms of employees with different race, gender, nationality, and ethnicity. Though this increasing level of workforce diversity within an organization bring probability of high turnover cost, communication barriers, and interpersonal conflict; yet this diversity results in substantial possible advantages like better decision making, more successful marketing strategies for variety of or different types of target markets, and great levels of innovation and creativity (Gröschl, 2011). Thus, globalization is a major contributor in increasing the workplace diversity, where, this diversity has provided various advantages to businesses as well as individuals. There organizations all across the globe, particularly in developed economies, are now accommodating as well as valuing a multicultural staff consist of workers having diverse backgrounds in terms of religion, ethnicity, gender, nationality, and race. Thus, the business world has changed and aligned with the concept of diverse workforces due to the increasing advantages that can be reaped by it and the global forces that have contributed towards it.

Characteristics That Comprise a Multicultural Organization

Reaping the benefits of workforce diversity i.e. multiculturalism presents greater challenges for businesses, but it also pose new opportunities as well. However, a simple announcement that the company values workforce diversity is not enough, since it demands that mangers must develop an organization that encourages workforce with mixed backgrounds, cultures, and experiences and accomplish their fullest potential to benefit the business as well as themselves. Hence, a multicultural business is required to efficiently manage diverse workforce throughout the company and work really hard for implementing the plan of doing so.

There are six key characteristics that comprise a multicultural organization, which includes pluralism; full integration of informal network; full structural integration; an absence of discrimination as well as prejudice; equal identification with business goals with all groups and minimum inter group conflicts.
