Global Warming

Thesis Statement

Global warming is one of the most hotly debated topics on earth. It's a situation where earth tends to get warmer due to the destruction of ozone layer. The earth can also get warm if there is lack of rain. Ozone layer prevent direct rays from sun to the earth, these rays are called Ultraviolet rays. Rain is very essential in human life. We need water in order to survive. Other uses of rain are irrigation and production of hydroelectric power. Rain also helps to cool the land once the sun has over heated it.

Mainly, humans themselves cause global warming. Rapid increase in population led to the growth of humans demands in the environment. Humans clear forests particularly tropical forests for logging, paper need, charcoal, and agriculture. Humans also cut down tree to clear areas for their settlement. Rate of human beings cutting down tree is not direct proportional to the rate of planting them. Cutting down trees leave the land bare, this way it's easy for sun to absorb all the wetness in the soil. These human activities result in production of gases like carbon dioxide and others since trees and other green vegetables reduce carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and release oxygen. When these gases accumulate in the atmosphere they act as a blanket making the earth much warmer. This action is called the green house effect. Other greenhouse gases are produced as a esult of man's industrial activ ties like in factories and cars. Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone. (Pennybacker, 2003)

Once the land is bare and there is no rain, it will result into high temperature. Higher temperatures will result in drying up of water catchments and other resources in the tropics and therefore create desertification. Desertification means less habitable land for both man and other organisms. Deserts may expand into existing rangelands, and the character of some of our National Parks may be permanently altered.

High temperature can also cause melting of polar ice. Melting of polar ice will result in some of the Island countries to submerge and disappear completely leading to further loss of habitat. Loss of habitat may result in the extinction of many animal and plant species before they are even known to science. High temperature, drought, floods and soil degradation will likely diminish food production. Disease like Malaria will also increase given that mosquitoes prefer warm grounds. (Baliunas, 2003)

There is a necessity of increase in planting trees in order to avoid this situation. Trees will absorb carbon dioxide hence act as green house inventory. Large factories should find the way to dispose their emissions or prepare greenhouse gas inventories. Government of the individual countries should actively pursue programs and policies that will result in greenhouse gas emission reductions. People should also be educated about the necessity of trees in cooling the land. They should also be aware how hazardous it can be ...
