Gendered Differences in Conversational Style

Introduction

Conversation is a broad concept and not just a use of words and sentences to convey information. Communication involves more than words, conversation is mix of words, emotions, facial expressions, and postures. This is the reason why people misunderstand each other so frequently. These misunderstandings are commonly found in communication among men and women. How frequently we note our parents having a quarrel for no reason, and we sit back and think, why they are arguing on a simple matter. May be mother just wanted to have a chat with father, but father was not in a mood of a chat. This essay highlights some differences in men and women, which often lead to miscommunication between the genders. Most of the research focuses on men's weaknesses in understanding women; this research will highlight traits of men, which women should appreciate in order to understand men way of communication.

Discussion

There are different characteristic, habits and nature of men and women, which, when not understood properly, lead to misunderstandings. In the following paragraphs, I will highlight these characteristic of men and women (Solnit, 2008).

General Behavior of Men

Men have a habit of explaining things to women, whether or not they truly understand the situation. This implies that men know everything about women; and therefore, women are not provided opportunities to speak up their minds. As a result, women are denied opportunities to commune about their perspectives and choices, and their dreams are crushed under the realm of men. Women are discouraged and feel that they don't have right to speak. They are brought up as self-limited and unconfident due to men's over confidence. Sometime, women's own lack of confidence gives opportunities to men to become their decision maker (Solnit, 2008).
