Introduction

The concept of gangs dates back to 1920s and 1950s. This shows that the concept is not new and has been present in the world since long. It is important for the people to understand that the concept of gangs is not new and has been present since long. However, in the world today, the concept has spread very quickly and is causing a lot of damage to the society. The negative impact of gangs is destroying the peace of the world and is causing a lot of disruption. To combat this issue, all countries have formulated and designed a strategy to deal with gang problems. The video that will be discussed in this paper is an interview of the author of the book 'A World of Gangs.' John Hagedorn, the author of the book has discussed the different incidents that have taken place in different parts of the world and that have helped the people in understanding the power that gangs possess.

There are a number of reasons behind the formation of gangs and their social and financial position is one of the major reasons.

Discussion

The author of the book, Hagedorn has explained the different aspects of why gangs are formed and what the reasons behind the formation of such groups are. In his interview, he has also spoken about the Mumbai attacks and specifically about the Chicago gangs. In addition to this, he has also given his views on the terrorist group, Al Qaeda (Hagedorn, 2009). The reasons that he has presented in his book for the formation of gangs are very true. He has mentioned how gangs were formed in the past and the reasons, and also how gangs are formed today and what are the reasons today which influence them to form a gang.

In his book, he has mentioned the Chicago gangs. A well known criminal related to the Chicago gangs was Al Capone. He was one of the biggest criminal in the United States and was involved in activities such as smuggling, prostitution and bootlegging liquor. He was expelled from school at the age of 14. He came to Chicago and his urge to earn money caught him into illegal activities. He started by selling liquor illegally and then found new illegal ways of earning money. He also bribed government officials to get his work done (Hagedorn, 2006). There are certain aspects according to which gang members are assessed, following are some of them.

These are the internal aspects of the individual i.e. emotions, personality, goals interests, beliefs, mental health, behaviors and strengths and weaknesses. In the old days, the reason for joining gangs was different as compared to today. In the old days, people wanted to take revenge for dropping out of school or for being abandoned by their friends or family. Al Capone became a gang member for the same reason i.e. he was a school dropout. His behavior changed completely after this incident and got indulged in illegal activities.
