Ethical dilemma requires ethical decision-making. Ethical decision-making is a psychological process that examines several ethical rules and principles to judge or guide group or individual decisions or aimed actions. It helps an individual to determine the right approach also capacitate an individual to judge whether any individual's actions or decisions are appropriate or not. Proton Ski Expedition is a company that takes groups to mountaintops and dangerous terrains, through helicopter. Charlie Illingworth formed the company two years ago. Michael is working at the company as an expedition-guide. His primary responsibility is to assure the skier's safety.
As official manager of the company, Charlie rides on the helicopter on almost every expedition. Due to high insurance costs for such expedition, each individual pays considerable amount, it is extremely difficult to book a group completely that would pay such excessive amount.
One morning, Michael is supposed to take the group of skiers to Proud Peak, which is about an hour away by helicopter. Recently, there has been continuous bad weather spell and lack of groups for expedition. This trip is of immense value to the company, as successful expedition will be a breathing air for the business, whereas, any failure would mean business wind-up.
The sky this morning is bright blue and clear. The conditions are perfect for helicopter flying and landing at the mountaintop. However, Michael gets out of his bed with awkward feeling for the expedition; an expedition that he has to do, no matter what.
Michael is a trained and seasoned skiing professional and is confident about managing any challenge that might arise during the journey. One of the job responsibilities of Michael is to assure the correctness of conditions and adjudicate about the safety of ski-trip. He always carries a backpack, having gear for testing the snow pack and determining whether avalanche circumstances exist. As the chopper nears the mountain-peak, Charlie briefs, skiers, about the thrills of skiing experience and the methods they would be required to adopt on the trip. The plan is to lower Michael first, then the skiers, by towrope and facilitate the group in skiing. Meanwhile, the pilot and Charlie would monitor the activities from the helicopter.
Michael and the group of skiers are set down at mountaintop. Michael sets off to work while removing his testing gear. The results of the test show that skiing on the slope may not be good today. The conditions are perfect at the edge of Avalanche. Michael is aware that he can proceed as there has been many occasions where skiers have skied successfully in even worse conditions. The problem will arise only if snows start to shift and slide.
Meanwhile, Charlie speaks to Michael over his walkie-talkie, that he should give the okay signal and ...
