Memory

Memory - it is an example of activities which include both the physiological - biological and cognitive processes, implementation of which is currently expected to the fact that some past events that are near or distant in time, significantly modified the order of the body, it is one of the cognitive functions and types of mental activity, intended to preserve, store and reproduce information. In short, it is the long-term ability to store information about the events of the outside world and the reactions of the organism and reuse it in mind when needed(Loiseau,1998).

Epilepsy and memory

Patients with epilepsy often complain of memory deficits, which become particularly evident in patients with temporal focus. This problem occurs with those patients with temporal lobe epilepsy; because of the histological degeneration or sclerosis. In epilepsy memory disorders have different causes; Binnie (1990) summarizes the neurophysiology mechanisms by which epilepsy may interfere with the ability to learn:

1. Direct interruption of the coding process epileptic formation activity that interferes with the ability to respond to information, process, stored or retrieved.

2. Disruption of the consolidation process by which information is encoded, stored and recalled. This suspension is due to trauma but it is a temporally distant from the learning experience (Bertrand, 2002).

3. Neural tissue permanent injuries that reduce their ability to react adaptively to new learning

4. Changes in neuronal function related to drugs antiepileptic drugs used to treat epilepsy

Effects of Epilepsy on Learning and Memory

Children with epilepsy have more learning problems than other children. Frequent but brief periods of absence will prevent the child get the necessary information. Other types of epilepsy can cause the child so tired that prevent one from completing their homework. Drugs for epilepsy may also affect learning. In children who have other disabilities, learning difficulties get older(Olson,2008).

A child with poor school performance should be subjected to adequate evaluation in your school. After evaluation of the school staffs with parents develop a plan for special assistance for the child to receive the necessary assistance or exceptional education services (IEP - Individualized Education Program / Individualized Education Program). Parents also should work with your child's physician to ensure that minimize both seizures and medication side effects(Engel,1996).

Memory loss at any age can be caused by a variety of problems including anxiety, depression, medication side effects, the aging process and the disease itself. The drugs can affect the process of thinking, including memory or concentration. These problems occur more when the therapeutic level of treatment is too high. The people who have seizures or seizures usually do not remember the attack itself, but this is no further loss of memory.

The problems associated with learning and memory can be a source of frustration for people with epilepsy.
