Introduction

Employee is a valuable asset of an organization. The progress of an organization depends largely on the performance of its employees. Training is the process aiming to enhance the skills and competencies of individuals for taking up a task or doing a particular job. Employee training and employee development is a core requirement in the success and progress of an organization because of the numerous benefits that it brings along. The assurance of an increase in performance of its employees is one of the driving factors for organizations to design and plan training programs. There are a variety of methods through which employee development can be undertaken with respective benefits associated with each of them. It is the job of Human resource management to assure that the right method is employed at the right time to bring efficient results for an organization's development.

Training is valuable for an organization's development. Its importance cannot be ruled out because of a range of benefits that it serves to both the organization and the employees. Training is essential in developing a workforce that is competent to accomplish the work goals efficiently which will ultimately lead to an organization's success. Training helps in developing multiple skills in the employees which provides an organization with multi skill employees. When employees get training and, therefore, understand the job at hand, it reduces the chance of accidents and mishaps and ensures quality (Aguinis & Kraiger 2009). Since quality is a key to success and is required for success in the market, training assures that this goal is met. Also, it improves efficiency and productivity of employees. When provided with proper training, employees can show quality as well as quantity in the work they are performing. This results in a reduced wastage of time, money and resources, consequently, benefiting the organization.

There are many methods that can be employed for the training of employees. The two basic ways of imparting training are 'on the job training' and 'off the job training'. These two ways can be employed for a variety of training methods. On the job training methods are such in which employees are trained in an actual working scenario. Such methods would include job shadowing, job rotating, coaching and temporary promotions. These are methods that help employees to gain knowledge and explore areas that they have never worked on yet. This will develop multiple skills in an employee and in learning significantly outside their own area of expertise. Asking employees to work in teams is also a method that is sometimes used to let employees learn from each other and at the same time develop communication among each other. Off the job training, on the other hand, employs methods that may not necessarily provide a working environment to the employees.
