Introduction

Sustainable development is a strategy by which communities look for economic development approaches that also help the improvement of the local environment and quality of life. This development has become a significant guide to many communities that have found that traditional methods of planning and development are creating societal and environmental problems rather than solving them. Thus, sustainable development offers real, long lasting solution that will strengthen the future, where traditional approaches can lead to overcrowding, sprawl, pollution and resource over consumption Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development).

Thus, sustainable development provides a structure under which communities can use resources effectively, create well-organized infrastructures, guard and improve quality of life. Furthermore, it provides in the creation of new businesses to strengthen their economies. Thus, helping the communities to create healthy society that can maintain the next generation, as well as those that follow theirs (Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development).

Issues, effects and methods of sustainable development for under developed countries

The newspapers and journals are almost daily full of reminders of the approaching collision between the demands of a growing global population and the planetary environment in the developing countries. There is no doubt and question that the world, especially the developing countries has serious environmental issues and its methods of solving, a few of which are discussed below (Building Sustainable Communities):

Global Warming

Global warming which is causing by the continuing emissions of carbon dioxide and many other trace gases threatens major worldwide climatic changes, flooding of low-lying areas, and decreased agricultural production.

The governments of developing countries are however, reducing the threat of global warming by not adopting more efficient land use patterns, but also by improving the shipment and transportation systems, and by developing programs to grow community-wide energy efficiency. Furthermore, they are executing policies and programs to decrease emissions of the other trace gases that add to global warming. Additional benefits of these efforts include decreased air pollution, less traffic congestion, investment capital, more disposable income and a better quality of life (Building Sustainable Communities).

Waste Management

The government is facing growing problems and costs as to whether it is solid waste disposal capacity issue, more severe sewage standards for wastewater, or preventing long-lasting toxic contamination from chemically complex dangerous wastes, this continues to be a major challenge.

However, the governments for these countries are responsible for the treatment and disposal of a large part of residential, commercial, and industrial wastes. However, now it has been buried, and dumped in oceans and rivers.

Today people are becoming more informed about waste. Local governments are developing programs to produce less of it, recycle or else recapture useful resources from it, and then bury only what is remaining. Additionally, cities are among the leaders in the effort to develop markets for goods made from recycled wastes, which is one of the keys to build sustainable communities that is by converting wastes to useful resources (Building Sustainable Communities).
