Introduction

Underage drinking and driving is a major cause of teen death in the United States. According to statistics, teenagers are the most dangerous driver to which drinking is an add-on; consequently, they face road accidents, which are fatal in most of the cases. A study conducted in 2003 revealed that the blood alcohol concentration in male teenage drivers was higher as compared to female teenagers. The underage drinking and driving also affects the family and the community around the teenagers. This paper aims to determine the reasons why teenagers drink and drive.

Drinking and Driving

Teenagers are probably the most reckless drivers as they prefer thrill and adventure. As they attain a driving license in hand at this age, they feel the excitement and invincibility. To celebrate their achievement, they set off on the road at high speed. What if, at that moment, they have also consumed a drink or two? Under age drunk drivers contribute to more than 40% of the road accidents, according to research. The underage drinking and driving is a major problem in the United States. Different strategies are being implemented to educate the youth about the consequences of drunk driving and its impact on the community.

The main reason is that the youth are not aware about the consequences of drunk driving. They need to be educated about the risks and problems associated with it. Different NGOs, government agencies and charities, have developed strategies to spread awareness against underage drinking and reckless driving. They encourage the child involved in such incident to enroll in group therapy (Wilson & Mann, pp. 44). Parents are also encouraged to take part in the therapy session with their child as it will improve the interaction and communication between them. The youth must be encouraged to take part in community services and should also take part in the awareness campaign.

Other Substances than Alcohol

Alcohol is the most common choice of drug among the youth. They can easily get alcohol from anywhere. When a youngster starts consuming alcohol, he is unable to control himself and gradually becomes addicted to it. Drinking along with driving is never a good combination, especially when the driver is underage. It has several consequences, and it causes a major impact on the family of the youth. Many families have lost their teenage children due to their children's reckless driving while drinking. This issue has been a great cause of concern and debate among scholars and researchers as well as parents.

The biggest concern about drugged driving is that driving under the influence of a drug that works in the brain may impair motor skills, ability to react in time and judgment. Drugged driving is taken care of in the field of public health concern because not only puts the driver at risk, but also passengers and other road users.
