Diversity in Higher Education

In this article, McMahon has stressed the importance of Diversity in Higher Education. Diversity is the essence and an integral element of American education system. Most of the public and private schools have now realized the importance of inclusive education. Given the diversity of students in each class, teachers use the curriculum to fit the approved program, teaching or learning environment to meet the diverse needs of the whole class. Differentiated instruction is therefore a first step to measure and assess the needs of all students in relation to improving students' learning abilities (McMahon, 2006). Through the process of decision making, the teacher may decide to make adjustments to strengthen the program or provide instructional support, in other words to provide differentiated instruction consistent with the general objectives set out formally for small groups of students. In establishing these groupings, they can be based on the needs, interests and (or) the capacities of students. Adjustments of this nature are dynamic in the sense that subsequent evaluation led to further adjustments in order to increase learning opportunities for students. These groups must be flexible and be based on the needs of students in a given subject (Valverde, Leonard, 1998).

Students coming from various backgrounds help the students to learn in more competitive environment. The more diverse the background of the students, the more skills and abilities they bring. People from different background have different skills and and have various capabilities that leads an institute a more diverse one.

In the past two decades, indigenous peoples and Afro-Latin America have been making significant progress on several matters pertaining to their quality of life.
