Abstract

Nursing is a major contributing professional field in healthcare settings. The healthcare services provided by nurses' aid fellow healthcare providers in providing quality care services. Knowledge is an imperative part of quality nursing practice. Several theories provide guidance to nurses in adopting and pursuing an enhanced healthcare plan. The metaparadigm of nursing is quite significant, since all the theories reflect their parameters, concerned individuals, environments, avenues of health and nursing. This paper will entertain the theories of nursing, processes involved in the nursing profession, and how to incorporate them in everyday nursing practice.

Introduction

Nursing is a prime profession in the healthcare system. It involves the diagnosis, planning and delivery of nursing care services to patients. For quality care provision, nurses are trained and educated to assist healthcare providers in alleviating the suffering as well as preventing illness or any injury. American Nurses Association`s proposed definition of nursing is “Nursing are the optimization, promotion and protection of abilities and the well being, prevention of injury and illness, and the advocacy regarding care of individuals, families, communities as well as the populations ” (ANA, 2010). Several phenomenon and philosophies allied to the nursing discipline have been developed with the aim of promoting safety and quality care provisions to patients. The central objective of the nursing profession, in the healthcare system, is to enhance the relationship with patients and to diversify their communications by making use of available nursing knowledge.

Development of Nursing Knowledge

The development of knowledge is one of the major challenges for nurses. Barrette (2002) identifies the reason, as nursing knowledge not only fulfills the need at the level of academia, but also at the level of professional practice. Therefore, understanding ways to develop knowledge is an integral part of nursing practice. It should fulfill professional and educational needs related to nursing information. The nursing discipline has undergone many transitions. Therefore, it possesses a strong historical background. Several nurses have proposed various philosophies and theories that illustrate the gathering process of nursing knowledge. The development of knowledge in nursing is the consistent phenomenon. Nursing has encompassed various substantial theories. Florence Nightingale, a well-known pioneer in the discipline of nursing, emphasized on two factors in nursing which included basics of nursing and nurse relationship with patients.

Historically, the nursing discipline did not capitalize on nursing theories until the mid of 20th century. The development of theory became a significant topic to discuss and publish during the period of 1960s to 1970s. In 1980s, analysts and scholars identified the validity of numerous approaches for the development of theories in nursing. Therefore, the basic purpose is to organize theories in a meaningful way facilitating the development of additional knowledge, research and practice. Various philosophies of nursing, such as advocacy, confidentiality, patient safety and management, used logical thoughts and reasoning to illustrate the meaning of nursing, as well as nursing phenomenon.
