The purpose of this study is to explore the self management of the older adults suffering from diabetes mellitus Type 2. It will also assess and explore illness management and illness perception of the older adults with the diabetes mellitus. This study also outlines the importance of self management in the diabetes patients. This study therefore has the potential wider benefit to global health practice and nursing practice. It will have implications for facilitating and understanding the self management behaviours with type2 diabetes Mellitus for older people (Munshi, 2006, pp1794).
Background of the Study
In older adults diabetes is a complex and dynamic interaction between the relentless ageing processes, functional loss, and a wide spread vascular disease and a major metabolic disturbance. To minimize their risk of development the falls, depressive illness, and cognitive dysfunction are very essential complications that require the innovative and novel strategies. One of the solutions to improve the health outcome for the individual suffering from chronic illness is to provide these older individuals with the support they require to manage their disease effectively (Clark, Gong & Kaciroti, 2001, pp.769). Therefore multidisciplinary care is needed for the older people which are very well coordinated across the residential, secondary, primary, and social services. Since Diabetes mellitus causes a range of complications therefore it is known to be a major health care burden. It often leads to various problems such as stroke, cardio vascular diseases, and chronic kidney diseases often causing early death and chronic problems. In order to diminish and reduce these burden strategies to prevent diabetes complications needs to be addressed. At present, the most significant laboratory test to monitor metabolic control and long term blood glucose or is Haemoglobin A1C that is generally known as A1C. At diabetes management the success of the patient is based often on their metabolic control (Glasgow, Toobert, Hampton, Brown& Lewinsohn, 1992, pp. 61).
To a life of a person with diabetes mellitus, the self management is very crucial and it is known to be a important factor to prevent the diabetes development and complications, it is mainly defined ...
