Democracy in the Arab World

Introduction

Democracy is a form of government in which the citizens of a country decide all the policies and all the laws. The citizen's altogether tried to achieve a state where everyone is given an equal opportunity to express their views. Basicall democracy is a process in which the general public votes and chooses their representatives so that he would represent the public in the assembly.

After the third wave which began in 1974, almost 40 countries adopted the democratic government. At the end of 1990s the number rose to around to 117.but there was only one region which never became democratic and it is the Arab world. The most common reason that one assumes is that it is because of the religion and its culture. After all, the Arabs share the same language, same beliefs and practices and most of all the countries belong to the same region (Khashan, 1998).

Discussion

Zakaria (2012) in his article have enlightened the situation in the Arab world. Zakaria has laid down certain factors that explain why the Arab world couldn't adopt democratic government. In his article Zakaria also has given opinion about an article written by a Harvard professor, Eric Chaney. Zakaria states that Chaney in his papers has given some reasons why the Arab world never embraced democracy. Chaney has developed various hypotheses and then tested this hypothesis. He has collected data on the Arab world and gave reasons of why there is no democracy in the Arab world. According to Chaney it was assumed that since the countries in the Arab region have oil reserves, that is why it lacks democracy, but Chaney argues that's not the case. Even the countries that are near to Arab world failed to sustain democracy in their region.
