Death Penalty

Introduction

This assignment is based on Death Penalty. The death penalty also referred as Capital Punishment has existed since the beginning of civilization when Kings introduced this punishment in order keep crime under control and punish those who violate the laws. This allowed societies to maintain peace. This penalty made its way through time to today's world where death penalty is given to those who commit severe crimes. In the United States, death penalty existed since its inception and has now turned into a controversial issue since people have started to object to this penalty since it takes away the rights of humans to live.

The main advantage of death penalty is that people get afraid of committing crimes because they know that they will be killed if caught. The adverse psychological impacts that death penalty is married with have implications not only for the person being executed but also for the many people directly and indirectly involved in his legal killing. The life stories of many a correctional officers is a testament to the aforementioned statement. The correctional officers are people who see the misery and plight of these people first hand. The time they spend with the death row inmates creates a sense of bond between the correctional officers and the inmates. It is a very paradoxical experience for the correctional officers as well as the family of the person on death penalty (Unnever, pp. 463).

Discussion and Analysis

In the United States, death penalty was stopped in 1972 by the supreme court but it was again allowed from 1976; however, not all states have allowed this punishment and some have still banned it. People in the United States have a different view because in several cases, after imposing death penalties, crimes have risen instead of decreasing. This shows that this punishment does not have an impact on crime therefore, it should be make illegal. There is one major issue with the death penalty. In many cases, innocent people are punished because all crimes are not solved accurately. In such cases, it may be possible for an innocent person to be killed. If this happens, it is unjust to kill someone who has done no harm. On the other hand, if death penalty did not exist, they person could be imprisoned and maybe after sometime could prove himself to be innocent. However, modern science and technology has helped to reduce the errors of an innocent having to face punishment for something that he did not do; but still even today, people are being wrongly killed because of the crime they did not commit (John, pp. 51).

The doctors that serve in legal cases of death penalty face severe mental strain and pressure. They have to comply with dual loyalty - they have to remain loyal to the employer as well as the death row inmate. They have to comply with the legal rules and they also have to respect the privacy of the dangerous man whom they have to work on and work ...
