Diversity and difference in contemporary British society

Introduction

The society of the United Kingdom is plural. It encompasses of multiple cultures, with enormous differences pertaining to higher ethnic diversity. The conceptual edifice of ethnic diversity rests upon the idea that there is acceptance for prevailing cultural and ethical differences; pertains to the homogenization of different cultures in one single society, and therefore, adapting their culture, as well as, transmitting inherited cultural flavours to their culture, in return. The context of cultural diversity is deeper and wider, however, precisely; it is defined as “the variety of human societies and cultures that prevail in a specific geographic region with prevailing cultural and ethnic differences”. The idea originates from presenting a beautiful tapestry of cultural values and differences that yield a different and exotic set of values, norms, ethics and societal outlook for the residents. It advocates acceptance and openness for different cultural identities, but rather, they are valued and adapted. Consequently a new culture is born, that pertains to original cultural heritage, as well as, newly adapted cultural values, that enrich and add value to the existing cultural heritage. The diversity of British society has added much more enrichment to the prevailing British culture, as well as, has contributed to emerge with flavours of different cultures in a well-integrated nation (Martinson, 2012, pp. 1-2).

Diversity adds value and worth to a society, however, it needs greater acceptance and openness, as well as, tolerance in native members of the society. A culturally diverse society passes through different phases of transformation, when a new culture tries to induce, and people from different cultures immigrate. However, once the multiculturism is absorbed, the society achieves greater augmentation and viability. The essences of different cultures add to the value premise, rather than, entirely changing it, and therefore, the existing culture flourishes.

The paper discusses cultural diversity and differences in the United Kingdom. It attempts to throw light over the concepts pertaining to strength and advantage of diversity in British society.
