Role of a Sport and Exercise Scientist

The sport and exercise scientist's role has dramatically expanded and developed in the past few years. While the popularity and demand for the teams and performers remain the major aspect of the sporting profession, there has also been an increase in the demand of the community based sport and exercise scientists who help and assist the individuals in leading a healthy and active life. There has been an increase in the demand of the community based programs involving the physical activities. The exercise and sports science initiated as a sideline. During the 19th century, the proper diet and physical training were based on untested reasoning and personal beliefs. For example, during that period, eating meat was considered as important and was emphasized as it was the belief that it will replace the muscles that have been broken during the exercise (independent.co.uk). The sportsmen used to eat mostly meals while avoiding vegetables and dairy products. However, passionate biologist and doctors started asking questions and conducting experiments regarding the healthy foods and exercise benefits, and gradually the scientific picture started emerging. In the middle of the 20th century athletes, doctors and individuals started to recognize the importance and values of these new studies and discoveries.

There are countless sports and exercise scientists that are practicing in the UK. Furthermore, there are several organizations and centers that are working for enhancing and improving the sports and exercise activities of the individuals. Several of the centers or organizations collaborate together and form a partnership for the purpose of improving the performance and achieving success in the international sporting stage. There are many centers, in which the sports and exercise scientist help and assists the individuals to achieve better performance and prepare them for the competitions or tournaments for international levels (Berryman & Park, 2002, pp. 78-92).

The main role of the sport and exercise scientists is to assist the individuals to improve and enhance their sporting performance and/or the health of the normal individuals. These scientists usually specialize in certain areas. Sport science involves supporting sports clubs and athletes. Exercise science is concerned with improving health, preventing illness and helping recovery from illness through programs of physical activity (Thatcher et al, 2009, pp. 98-134). The sport scientist supports the sports clubs or athletes through providing them with their expert knowledge. Many of the sportsmen, athletes and individuals rely on the sports and exercise scientists to help them in improving their health and sporting performance. The sports scientists collaborate with other sporting professionals like dieticians, physiotherapists and coaches to provide help in improving the health of the individuals or sportsmen. The scientists working with athletes and clubs usually provide them with health tips and advices along with the medical staff and the coaching.
