Fitness Plus is a training center located in North Carolina. Due to the growing number of members and large fluctuations in demand, Fitness Plus is overcrowded. The result is the exercise equipment is not available for use by customers. This work will focus on the issue of current capacity, and the decision to expand existing facilities or build a new facility.
Introduction
Fitness Plus is a training center located in North Carolina. Due to the growing number of members and large fluctuations in demand, Fitness Plus is overcrowded. The result is the exercise equipment is not available for use by customers. As noted by Krajewski and Ritzman (1999) "Capacity planning is critical to the long-term success of an organization" (p. 301). This paper will focus on current issues facing the ability to Fitness Plus, and the decision to expand existing facilities or build a new facility (Krajewski, 1999, 33).
Background
In 1988, Fitness Plus opens in Greensboro, North Carolina. Recently, membership has grown to a point of excess capacity during peak hours of the day. Figure 1 provides an excellent graphic representation of the flow within the facility, and various measures of capacity. The studies were carried out to existing members, which shows that the average person works for 60 minutes per session. Fitness Plus has two options to solve the problem of expanding capacity at existing facilities, which take four months, or open a new facility, which will take six months. May today, and the peak season for applications is January of each year. In addition, the center of the city is beginning to repopulate with the companies. New competitors in the area are the YMCA (which offers a full range of services at low cost), the Oasis (which serves young adults, age 16 years), and Gold's Fitness (which is the weight and cardiovascular training only).
Below are specific activities that can offer Fitness Plus, and their respective capacities:
City Sports teams (softball, volleyball and swimming teams)

Yoga classes (2/week in the aerobics room)
Whirlpool (room 1/locker)
Massage Therapist Training
Hours Monday through Thursday from 6:30 am to 11:00 pm Friday and Saturday from 6:30 am to 8:00 pm Sunday 24:00-20:00
