Introduction

The criminal justice system of United States is an intricate legislative institute that is a mode through which the American society can be policed by the Police department (Bergman, 2010). Furthermore, the police can imprison those people who are threatening for the citizens. It is the duty of criminal justice system in United States to ensure that criminals are penalized ion an appropriate manner with respect to their criminal activities in order that they are turned out be productive citizens after the imprisonment. There are several aspects of the criminal justice system in United States that are controversial (Yancy & Jones, 2013). The pros and cons of this system rely on individual perspectives. In this paper we will study the pros and Cons of American Criminal justice system- Stand Your Ground Law with respect to the case of Trayvon Martin vs. George Zimmerman. We will highlight the significant aspects of this case to discuss the bad and good part of the criminal justice system and its impact on the whole American society.

Case Summary

The case begins with the fatal shooting of a 17 year old boy Trayvon Martin on 26th February 2012 by George Zimmerman in Florida, United States. Trayvon Martin belonged to African American ethnicity who was student of high school. However, George Zimmerman is a 28 year old white Hispanic American. He was in neighborhood watch coordination for the gated society where Trayvon Martin stayed on temporary basis. On one hand, Zimmerman shot Travyon and was taken into custody for his act by the police. However he was released ultimately under the impression that he was not criminal and ho shot the boy for his self defense. On the other hand, after six weeks, the attention of United States media heightened and Zimmerman was alleged with crime of murder by prosecution. However, after his trial for five weeks, Zimmerman was again found innocent and released on 13th July 2013 (Yancy & Jones, 2013).

Zimmerman stated that he notified the police department that Travyon was a suspicious boy. He was on drug and he was walking around and looking at every house in the community on the night of that incident.
