What are the two major forms of discipline? Discuss the characteristics of both.

Ans1- The two major forms of discipline are positive and negative discipline. Positive discipline is a form of training and attitudinal conditioning used to correct deficiencies without invoking punishment. It is a systematic approach designed to instruct or guide employees in such a way that they become loyal, dedicated, responsible, and productive members of the organization. An organization which needs to develop proper discipline must have an involvement of workers who have undergone extensive training. The concept of discipline should be very clear among the people working in the organization. All the members working in the groups must have the same objectives and the individual goals should not vary that much. This can be only possible when the goals and objectives of the company will be clear to each employee and they would be communicated to follow it in the best possible way. This is the reason why the skill that is used by the supervisors proves to be a positive tool in implementing the discipline throughout the entire organization. The concept of punishment should be made very clear to each and every employee in order to avoid attempting any activity that can lead to serious consequences for the employee (Dantzker, 1998).

Negative discipline is a type of punishment that is referred as chastisement. The concept of progressive discipline defined as a part of the system refers to the escalated penalties by telling to all the employees in advance and imposing with increasing severity for repeated infractions that normally includes the following: oral warning, written warning, disciplinary layoff or suspension and discharge. There are situations in which the incidence related to the loss of regular days off, annual leave, or accumulated compensatory time leads to a severe punishment because of the violation of discipline. The suspension also takes place during such events which is not productive for any employee working in the organization. The usage of these punitive forms of discipline must be kept for unadjusted, discontented nonconformist who struggled to adopt much more positive methods. This is the reason why the punishment is the first step in the process of either changing the behavior or dismissing employee from the organization without giving any further notice (Ellis, 1989).

Q2- What are the requisites of punishment? Which of these has the greatest deterrent to future misconduct? Discuss your reasons.

Ans2- The requisites of punishment include: certainty, swiftness, fairness and impartiality, consistency and deterrence for others. It is a true fact that punishing employee does not provide a lot of guarantee that the future conduct or performance would improve that much. The enforcement of punishment must occur in such a way that it must not demoralize other employees working in the organization. The punishment should be given in a fair and consistent manner.
