Introduction

There are nearly 400 public crime laboratories or labs presently operating at different levels (municipal, county, state, federal) in the United States. Equipped with modern instruments, these scientific laboratories use different techniques of forensic science preserve, examine and process the evidence collected from the crime scene. The labs usually operate independently and separately but there are some that fall under the Department of Public Safety.
