Discussion
Communication in Patients with Learning Disabilities
The individuals with learning disabilities have impaired intelligence and, therefore, needs extensive care, guide and support of experts to maintain and improve the quality of their lives Eric, p.1, 2011). The patients with learning disabilities lie at a higher risk of acquiring healthcare problems and accidents. The nurses spend the longest time span with the patients by taking care of them. However, such patients are unable to transfer their needs and requirements to the nurses. It is, therefore, essential that nurses are trained and educated to have effective communication skills in terms of conceiving what the patient is delivering, as well as improving his communication ability. It is vital that the nurses should deliver the information in a simpler and conceivable manner without patronizing and complicating it (Godsell, Scarborough, 2006)
Barriers
There are several barriers in nursing communication with patients with learning disabilities. Some of them are as following
Lack of time
Poor listening and communicating abilities
Poor transference of information
Workload
Biases and personal assumptions
Nursing education and training
The adults suffering from learning disabilities constitute a vast group with diverse personalities and characteristics. They often come with challenging behaviour which is difficult to handle. Such individuals require appropriate and extensive care with augmented professional communication skills by the nursing professionals. It is essential that the nursing professional should be trained to develop the ability to understand their needs and to learn to develop a better partnership with such individuals (RCN, p.2, 2012).
