Counselling Relationships

Introduction

The counselling sessions are the sessions in which the therapist ask the problem and provide some alternative solutions to the client. In psychology, the counselling sessions with the clients based on listening the psychological problems and providing the best solution to them in order to overcome the problems. The Clarkson's “5x7 therapeutic matrix” provides the guideline to build a strong communication and relation with the client during a counselling session. In this paper, I will discuss the counselling session with “Emma” (pseudonym) in relation with the Clarkson model. Discussing her past abusive marriage and present marriage life, the counselling session reflects the Clarkson's Integrative Therapeutic Matrix and other concepts that I have studied throughout the course. The name “Emma” will be used upon agreement of the original client as a pseudonym. Different therapies related to marriages and separation counselling will be part of the discussion.

Discussion

Human is born of relationship, grow in relationships and get his education in relationships. Counselling relationship with someone needs a lot of attention and devotion. Clarkson's five relationship model provides scope and flexibility to a psychiatrist and therapists. These five models are the working alliance, the transferential and countertransferential relationship, the reparative/ developmentally needed relationship, the person to person relationship and the transpersonal relationship. Another part of 5x7 integrative Therapeutic Matrix is seven level models. These seven levels are physiological, emotional, nominative, normative, rational, narrative and transpersonal (Wittmer, 2005, pp.49-69).

Counselling

Five Relationship Model

The Clarkson five relations model provides a generic and holistic approach to the counselling sessions. This model is used during the sessions by the therapists and counsellors. The model encompasses working alliance, transferential and countertransferential relationships, reparative needed relationship, person to person relationship and transpersonal relationship.

The working alliance is a relation in which client and therapist work together to solve the problem; the transferential and countertransferential relationship focuses on the anticipated relationship where the experience of unconscious fears and wishes takes place; the reparative relationship suggests that the therapists should provide the reparative, corrective or replenishing action when the real parenting was abusive or deficient; the person to person relationship focuses on building the real relationship with the client so that whatever environment and techniques a therapist provides to the client, they will be for the client's well-being; the transpersonal relationship is the inexplicable and spiritual relationship dimension in psychotherapy.
