Contemporary Criminal and Social Justice Issue



Thesis Statement

The twenty first century criminal and social justice system is credible enough to extend fair justice to every citizen without any discrimination on basis of color.

Introduction

Criminal justice is a tool or discipline that delivers the justice to the doers of those activities that are unacceptable by the law or the society. It is an interdisciplinary as to achieve the objectives the techniques and measures are devised from law, psychology, sociology, history, and criminology. In the context of social system, it provides the justice system with rules and regulations to be observed while governing the criminal justice practices. The process of provision of criminal justice involves allegation, prosecution, hearing, sentence, then finally the justice granting either punishment or conviction. This complete process is overlooked by criminal justice system (Mesko et.al, 2004).

Social Justice is defined as exercising the principles and activities of a society keeping in view the concepts of equality and equity. Social justice promotes fairness and eliminates biasness. Social justice system treats people on the basis of being humans and no discrimination of gender, race, cast, color, and creed is practiced. It creates society that is free of injustice and a society that totally understands the importance of human rights. Social justice creates a civilized society that observes basic principles of equity and justice.

The operations of a criminal justice system as described above should be strictly promoting social justice as well. Unfortunately even after entering the twenty first century, it is still a dilemma of our society that contemporary criminal justice system does not promote social justice.

Discussion

According to the recent studies the rate of incarceration in the United States has increased since 1980. The prison population in United States reached up to figures that really are of great concern to the criminal and social justice system of the nation. This projection in the number of inmates required some revision in the system. The Three Strikes Law stated that if one person is found guilty of three crimes then he will be eligible to deserve a sentence of 25 years. This law was then revised and the specification if violent crimes was added to it.

A Contemporary Criminal and Social Justice Issue

The justice system of today, is failing to eliminate the discriminations practiced by the authorities on the basis of color. The majority of the inmate population in the United States comprises of black. This reveals that the white criminals have less probability of getting convicted as compared to black (Surette, 2011). This gives the impression as if two separate systems of laws and justice are being practiced in United Sates, one for black and one for White.

Issue in Sociological Context
