Introduction

The employees of any company are said to be the assets of the company. Like the responsibilities of the employees to perform their duties in best and efficient manner, the companies also have their responsibilities towards the employees. The companies have the responsibility to protect the rights of the employees. The companies are required to avoid any discrimination among the employees. The managers and the leaders of the company that implement their decisions based on ethical considerations regardless of any discrimination are found to attain their aims and objectives efficiently and effectively (Hunter, R., 1992). The companies that do not give strong consideration towards the elimination of discriminatory factors within the company's decisions, such companies face the lower satisfaction level among the employees and also the motivational level among the employees (Raymond F. G., 2003). The discriminatory factors within the companies sometimes cause the loss of potential employees to the companies. The potential employees, when are neglected due to the discriminatory issues, tends to leave the company and this causes a great loss to the company. The implementation of fair practices provides the ultimate goals and objectives to the company.

Brief summary of the case

In the case, it has been highlighted that the promotion of an employee, namely Maria, is not been made based on the language accent issue. Maria is a good employee to the company but she is also a loud employee and is used to of losing her temper. Maria also has some problems with attendance and tardiness. She very often comes late to her work giving excuses of family issues. Neglecting the factors of short temper, loudness, attendance and tardiness, the managers of the company decided to not to give promotion to Maria. She is not promoted only because of accent issue. Maria belongs to the second generation native-born American citizen with a graduate degree. Maria is working with the company for 10 years and he has been at the existing position since seven years. Maria has the problem of the accurate English accent because she belongs to the second generation native-born American. Considering this issue of Maria, the promotion was not given to her, and in place of her, the promotion is given to the employees, Alex. Alex also has the graduate degree but his time period of being with the company is less years as compared to Maria.
