Communication in health and social care organization

Task 2

Introduction

The interview panel was impressed by the commitment, knowledge, and the quality of materials that I produced. I have been offered the position which I accepted. The role I have been assigned is to assist the staff development coordinator in producing updated training materials. This task that I have been assigned to demonstrate the way cultural variations may influence communication in health care setting. Also, in this task, I would highlight the way legislation, charters, and the codes of practice would impact on the communication process. The latter part of this task is to impart some information supported by evidence to a friend from my course who is about to join me on work experience. I would analyze the effectiveness of the organizational systems and policies in the promotion of good practice in communication. Also, I would suggest some ways of improving the communication process in a health and social care setting.

2.1 Communication process in health care setting is influenced by values and cultural variations

There are several service users in all care homes having varying backgrounds and(Wilson-Stronks, 2008) considering a country like the UK, there are individuals from varying ethnic groups and backgrounds. Within a society, cultural values are respected. Ethnicity and religion are top priorities in the sector of health care. English, in the context of the UK, is the main language used, but it is not the official language because of its people belonging to varying ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

2.1.1Difficulty in expressing demands and feelings - For this reason, the service users might find it difficult to put forward their demands and feelings; it is in turn quite difficult to deal with the health care professionals. The NHS imparts translators that assist the service users in case of varying official languages in these cases. The health department ascertains that when the information is imparted to the service users/clients and the leaflets are disbursed, then varying languages are available for these (Wilson-Stronks, 2008).

2.1.2Poor quality of services - In case of such availability, the health sector would be impacted drastically and ineffective communication would then result in poor quality of services. Certain procedures and policies are put in place so that the social factors as well as the cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds are respected and the health care services are well practiced within a social and health care setting. Also, there are certain factors that require being taken into consideration with some service users, since they would always demand their interests and preferences for their welfare by means of socializing with people in accordance with their status and background (Stewart, 1995). Refer to Appendix for case study.

2.2 How legislation, charters, and codes of practice impact on the communication process?

Effective communication process at the workplace is accomplished by several means.

2.2.1Data protection Act - One of the significant legislations ensuring effective communication at workplace is the Data protection Act. Information may not be revealed to the third party without ...
