Communication and its affects



Introduction

Communication plays a vital role towards the success and growth of any organization. Proper messages to be delivered in timely manner are required for effective communication to take place. There are different kinds of messages used in our lives. They may be categorized broadly into three major categories including Good News messages, Neutral messages and Bad news messages. Good news and/or neutral messages are written on direct approach while bad news messages require a little more effort and written on indirect approach (Burke, 2007).

This paper is about “Bad news messages” that are the written form of negative, unpleasant and disappointing information for a reader used in business. These are in a form of memo, email or a letter. Bad news messages are rejections, negative feedbacks or changed policy announcement that are not beneficial for the receiver (Atwan, 2006).

Discussion

The case under discussion is “Chile Mine Collapse”. It was a mishap that happened whilst mining in San Jose mine in Copiapo, Chile, Tuesday, Aug. 05, 2010. Thirty three men were trapped in the mine and it had become highly sensitive case for the mining company. They had to handle the situation in front of the public as well as its own employees and their families which is not an easy task.

A bad news message is always delivered with a buffer so to decrease the impact of the news. This is the situation in which people are willing to hear the correct position and situation of their beloved ones. They need to know about their safety and soundness of their lives. They want that accurate information at the earliest. If the organization is unable to talk to the public or delays in communicating them, it leads to high negative impact on the organization's goodwill and public may become violent ...
