CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

This chapter will provide the background, objectives and the layout of the entire dissertation. It will focus upon the aims, objectives and the research questions that will be studied in the research.

Background

The Telecommunications market has been evolving since the time of its advent. The blend of computing and telecommunications has taken the standards of communication to great heights. Mobile unified messaging systems, known as Smartphones in the consumer segment, have set new standards with their features and functionality. Smartphones set new standards for

functionality in the telecommunications market. There has been tremendous amount of research work in this technology, and the resulting revenue generated has been overwhelming. New advances in this field have been greatly accepted and appreciated in the consumer market. Thus,

it is interesting to study the ever-evolving smartphone technology and its market (Taylor & Harper, 2003, pp. 267). Smartphones have made a huge impact on consumers and this has resulted in many vendors offering competitive services across the globe, usually partnering with carriers. It is clear that the Blackberry Smartphone is regarded by the market research firms as the most reliable and number one selling Smartphone. However, the recent introduction of the Apple iPhone provides a serious challenge to the Blackberry as the leader in this market (Viswanath & Arora, 2000, pp. 39).

Ever since the telephone was invented, there has been a tremendous change in the lifestyle of mankind. Every dimension in the man's life saw the invention's influence. There was a great advancement in the way people communicated and it is the communication that is very

significant in the growth of mankind. Every other field was seen changing with the advent of

new means of communication. Every dimension of the mankind which involved communication

saw advancements. This was a very welcoming phenomenon globally. Since then, research and

advancements never stopped in this booming field of Telecommunications (Dubos, 1988, pp. 52).

Today, in the 21st century, the definition of telecommunications is a lot different then what it meant at the time of its invention. There was always a string that ran commonly in both the computers and telephones.
