The Communicable Disease Center, the direct descendant of the MCWA, was organized in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 1, 1946. The role of the new Communicable Disease Center was much expanded from that of the MCWA; it was responsible for researching and controlling all communicable diseases except tuberculosis and venereal disease, which at that time were handled through separate offices located in Washington, D.C.
