Color Blindness

Introduction

Color blindness or deficiency of color vision is lack of ability of a person to see colors or simply inability to differentiate between colors. The main reason behind such a deficiency is the fault in retinal cones that make sense of different colors and transmit the information to brain through optic nerve. Many a times, people think that color blind people only see black and d white, which fortunately is not true, however, there are exceptions in that case, but the chances of such are very rare. As a matter of fact, there are many types of color blindness consisting of different combination of colors, however, in this paper the light would be shed over red/green color deficiency (Birch, 2012).

The most common inherited color blindness is of red-green color blindness, which affects the substantial portion of human population. This blindness falls under the category of partial color blindness, however further it is classified as Dichromacy and Anamalous trichromacy (). In this kind of blindness a person would have difficulty in differentiating red and green hues due to absence of green or red retinal photoreceptors. This deficiency is genetic and affects males more than females due to the fact that receptors which detect red or green colors are located over the X chromosome. This, however, males have only one, while females have, this makes males more vulnerable since they have one X and other Y chromosome (Gardner et. al, 2010).

In order to further elaborate this type of color blindness, small scale experiment is done in class. However, this paper will discuss the method used and a detailed description of results and conclusion. The intention of doing such an experiment was ascertain the prevalence of this deficiency in male and females.
