Introduction

Family Nurse Practitioner is a science and an art, has its own set of knowledge based on scientific theories and is focused on health and well being. Nursing is concerned with the psychological, spiritual, social and physical persons and not only the medical process in the patient diagnosed therefore, focuses on the overall responses of the person interacting with the environment. The hospital strives to meet the needs of people in various settings, including home, work, day care centers and hospitals, through personal interaction with individuals, families and the community. Nursing is a respectable art; its ultimate purpose is the welfare of other human beings (Mayo school of Health Sciences, 2011).

Roles and Responsibilities

FNP not only just work in hospital but, they also work in clinics, corporations, home health agencies, doctor's offices, schools, outpatient care centers, emergency rooms, nursing homes, public health and government agencies. Nursing career provides job permanency and schedule flexibilities, venue and responsibilities. Nursing is profitable if one has the qualifications specializations and leadership, management qualities to move up the career ladder.

Nurses also play the role of being the doctor's assistants by assisting them during surgeries, conducting emanations of patients and instead of doctors they diagnose the patients and treat any common illness or injuries. Nursing profession requires a thorough understanding of medications and how they should be administered (Hansten, 1999).

The roles of FNP include helping the sick or elderly people to retain or regain health; studying health and disease status of the elderly and collect information; analyze and interpret data. They also prioritize care plan as needed, evaluate results and monitor health status periodically. The social role of nursing must be understood as a connection between the elderly and the rest of the population. Nursing also has a management function such as nurses organize work, ensure quality care, and continue providing care to the elderly, help in defining protocols. Nurses also rationalize and contain costs, contain costs, promote reforms, define quality standards and cooperate in the evaluation systems and self evaluation.

They are the custodian of medical records at all times watching the update and accuracy of the data recorded in these documents. They monitor the conservation and the condition of supplies and instruments. They have to record and to inform their superiors of any incident; develop the nursing records and reports; perform preventive campaigns and work with them, and make health education whenever possible (Santiago, 2011).

Career of being a FNP holds many roles and responsibilities. As a nurse one has to work closely with the physician and be an essential part of the healthcare team. It is a nurse that administers the entire doctor's prescriptions on an on-going basis; perform treatments and examines them; and supports the patients with care through the period of recovery and therapies.
