Role & Requirements of the Family Nurse Practitioner

INTRODUCTION

Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have additional training and experience and are able to order and interpret diagnostic tests, communicate diagnoses, prescribe and administer medication and perform specific medical procedures. Nurse practitioners apply a holistic approach based on research. They focus on promoting health and preventing disease and injury, their care complement those provided by others, they do not replace them. In addition to providing a wide range of patient care, nurse practitioners also help to obtain other health and social services they may need. All nurse practitioners work in partnership with other health professionals. Thus, they can consult doctors to discuss the needs of their patients. Family nurse practitioners are those practitioners that perform their nursing duties and responsibilities living at the home of the patient, under the supervision of the instructions of the doctor. This paper focuses on the discussion and analysis of there different factors and roles related to Family Nurse Practitioners.

THE FUTURE OF NURSING

After reading the IOM Report of 2011, it can be said that the role of nurses can never diminish. Considering the fact that theory provide health related services to the patients, along with consideration of the fact that health is one issue that would always need services of professionals in this field, the role of nursing in the future can never be ignored (Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing, 2011). Furthermore, it can also be said that due to the presence of so many diseases in the modern world, along with the fact that a significant increase in the number of diseases present in our world, it can be said that the importance of nursing in the future is only supposed to increase. This has always been the case over the period of history, where the future of nursing has always been seen an important aspect and has never been ignored (IOM, 2010).

NURSE PRACTITIONER CORE COMPETENCIES

Which competency do you feel is your biggest strength and why? And which one is your biggest weakness and why?

Although Nurse Practitioner graduates are required to meet all the 9 competencies, which are Scientific Foundation Competencies, Leadership Competencies, Quality Competencies, Practice Inquiry Competencies, Technology and Information Literacy Competencies, Policy Competencies, Health Delivery System Competencies, Ethics Competencies and Independent Practice Competencies, yet, there are a few that I am really good at, along with others that I am not really comfortable with (Anne, 2012). The core competency in this regard that I am really good at and can be called my biggest strength is the Quality Competencies. As a new Nursing Practitioner, I feel that my strength will be that of Quality Competencies because this is an essential component as a new Nursing Practitioner.
