CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Background

Southeast Asia has been warned by some as a somewhat smaller region of interest leading U.S. foreign policy and security. Otherwise conflict with terrorism has altered and transmitting more U.S. attention for Southeast Asia, especially the nations affected by Islamic radicalism. For some, this objective improvement, driven by contrast, conflict with terrorism, has to the total cost of attention to other key regional issues, such as China rapidly expanding engagement with the region. Some are concerned that rising Chinese influence in Southeast Asia has reached the total cost of U.S. League with the region, while others increasingly influential regional outlook Beijing mostly as a natural result of China's financial dynamics.

Aims and Objectives

South China Sea is mainly the issue from the 20th century, since the 70's sovereignty over the Nansha Islands due to issues including sovereignty over the island, marine division and resource allocation disputes. Disputes in the reefs, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and other neighbouring countries, the South China Sea have all or part of the Nansha Islands reefs claim of sovereignty, and the illegal occupation of the Spratly Islands part of the reefs. In the maritime delimitation disputes, in some countries around the South China Sea, a unilateral declaration of 200 nautical miles exclusive economic zone or continental shelf, these requirements are different claim or degree of invasion of the country's traditional territorial waters line ("U-shaped line") above. Some countries also in the exclusive economic zone or continental shelf system, based on their designated areas of the reef made the claim of sovereignty. In the scramble for resources, the South China Sea neighbouring countries in the South China Sea oil and gas resources exploitation is very rapid pace.

The main aim of the research is to find out the role of china in the maintenance of security in the region of South East Asia.

Research Questions

What is the role of China in regional organisations?

What is the current status of the relationship between China and ASEAN?

What steps should be taken by China in order to maintain the regional security?
