Character Analysis

Introduction

The writer, Ralph Ellison, has portrayed a character of a young person who is an African American and struggles to find his respectful place in the society in the early era of twentieth century. In this short story, despite using some statistical figures and using such facts that shows the racial discrimination in the time period, the writer has shown the struggle of this young person by creating a beautiful imagination because of which the reader could actually feel all those harsh moments that were experienced by this young man. The most important part here that enhances the importance of this story is using the key events that happened in “Battle Royal” that reveals some real issues related to the cultural discrimination and differences that affected the African American society greatly throughout the history. Here in this essay, a deep character analysis of the narrator has been made who did not used himself particularly in this story but used the support of a young African American character. This analysis will help in having of a better understanding of the respective character and its importance in the story.

Discussion

Here in this story, the narrator has represented the case of those Negroes that were mis-educated and were taught to look down upon the people belonging to their own race. They were also taught about the American history in such manner that it almost whitewashed the minds of these Afro American and they couldn't learn anything related to their own history and the immeasurable contributions made by black Americans in the history. In this story, the narrator has discriminated himself from other black un-educated Americans about whom the narrator feel very much superior them himself.

The extent of realization made by the narrator regarding the contents of the letter of Bledsoe, the narrator is very much demolished when coming to know that the person he trusted the most and even idolized him has betrayed that has resulted in the ruining of the opportunity of obtaining a higher level of studies by going to college that could help the narrator in having a much better and respectful life in the future.

The narrator has learned his lesson in a much better way while comparing this action of his trusted person that resulted in the removal for the narrator from the college in the earlier stage. Beside this, the other worst insult that Bledsoe can think of in order to explain the level of his anger and aggression more accurately is by highlighting the word “nigger”. Calling the narrator by this name has always hurt him deeply and has shown the level of racial discrimination that was in practice in the early twentieth century that tells that how the white people in that time period looked upon the black people like if they don't deserve to be treated well and were born to be insulted and treated as slaves.
