Retailers need to consider demographic factors and lifestyle in several ways. Consumer groups and individual customers can be identified by such demographic characteristics as gender, age, growth (population), life expectancy, literacy, language, family size, marital status and number of children, income level, the volume of retail purchases, mobility, place of residence, employment, occupation, education level and the national or racial affiliation. These characteristics have a significant impact on how people make retail purchases, as well as the actions of the retailers. The retailer must have some idea about the general demographic trends, as well as the demographic characteristics of their target market. This is considered as useful information that can serve as a starting point for retailers, since most firms are inherently local and regional (Meredith, 2002, 412).
