Background

Family in the case comprises of three members. Roger is 40 years old father, single father living with his 13 years old son, Roger. Roger's mother is a drug addict and patient of bipolar disorder. She has hereditary background of bipolar disorder. Currently, Mother is not living with her family.

Problem Identification

The case under consideration has multiple problems to address. The root cause of bipolar seems to be related to the mother. Mother's addiction and bipolar disorder are making the whole family suffer.

As a result, child Roger has been facing academic, social and personality related problems. Hence, the father, Jeff is unable to deal with the situation, questions and concerns of his young son.

Introduction

In the case understudy three family members will be taken under psychological treatment, including Jeff, Roger and his mother. It is obvious from the case under consideration that the whole family has been suffering from the psychological and behavioral state of the mother. Therefore, assessment and treatment will encompass all the members, combining individual and family sessions. Taking history, psychological assessment, behavior modification and communication pattern will be the focus of psychological treatment and intervention.

a. Assessing Family History

The very first step towards treatment, after identifying problems will be to collect information through deep case study. Treatment or intervention of the case will begin with case study.

A case study is in investigation type in which focus is on one person. Data collection methods in the case study include interviewing and observing the client and additionally conducting and administering psychological tests in order to identify and assure the validity of data or information gathered.

Case Study

Case study is the only research method in which focuses in on a single person or one family at one time. In-depth case studies utilize a huge range of data collection methods including observation, interviews and tests. The reason for doing so is to collect and gather all the relevant information primarily whereas, the other purpose of case study is to assure and confirm the data, information and facts. Case studies explore events happened before and underlying causes. Data collected through case study is difficult to generalize, for instance, every case of depression may not display similar symptoms, let say, one patient spends the whole day sleeping whereas, the other is in insomniac state. Moreover, case study method offers more opportunities to study variables and symptoms which would be unethical or even impossible to manipulate and explore in laboratory. The purpose of case study may vary. Primary aim of case study could also be treatment, therapy or counseling. Psychologists in the case study records and file the information in order to develop a treatment plan.
