Care Study Of An Elderly In An Acute Health Care Setting At The University Hospitals Of Leicester
Introduction
The report is based on the case analysis of Ama. The main aim of this report is to discuss all the nursing care plans, techniques and medications that are used to care Ama in the hospital. The assignment is based on a complete care plan of Ama, Ama is an 84- year old white British widow who left Scotland to live with her maternal grandparents in England about 60 years ago. She is suffering from Urinary tract infection (UTIs). I have been marked as the all time nurse for the care of Ama. I discuss all the roles and responsibilities that are required to care Ama in the hospital. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) is one of the most common infectious diseases, cause significant morbidity and mortality, and account for a large degree of medical expenditures (Pohl et.al 2007, p. 10 ). UTIs account for more than 7 million visits to physicians' offices, require roughly 1 million emergency room visits, and necessitate some 100,000 hospitalizations per year. For instance, the treatment of community-acquired UTIs cost approximately £1.6 billion per year, whereas nosocomial UTIs cost between £515 to £548 million annually.
Care plan to model the Roper-Logan-Tierney
The report starts with the model of Nursing which is most familiar to nurses was originally developed by Roper in 1976 and was updated and added to in 1980, 1981 and 1983 by Roper, Logan and Tierney. The model has been used in a wide variety of nursing settings. The model of nursing specifies 12 activities of daily living which are related to basic human needs (Perrotta et.al 2008, p. 4).
Controlling a persons body temperature is an important activity of daily living and is vital in everyday routines. The Roper Logan and Tierney's activities of living is used as a basis for Ama's assessment, this assessment sheet outlines the patients actual and potential problems with regard to jeans daily activities the assessment is also about collecting data and communicating with the patient. It is widely used as it is looked upon as a holistic model and suggested that it is not merely a checklist but a guide to enable a nurse to care for a patients needs (Milo et.al 2005, p. 12).
Using this assessment determines that Ama's mobility is not what it used to be and that she does not do any exercise, Ama also declared that she has socialised less since developing the infection as she is embarrassed about the wound. This showed that she needed emotional support and encouragement of independence. It was also established that Ama has had varicose vein surgery 20 years ago and has a long history of ankle swelling.
Prior to her hospital admission, Ama was usually wheelchair bound and transferred with hoist and standing aids in the care home. It has been revealed in her medical notes ...
