Introduction

The food service industry of the United Kingdom is one of the most modern food service markets in the all of Europe. The Hotel, Restaurant and Institutions sector (HRI) ranks number four, after footwear, clothing and motoring, (Jones and Wan, 1992). The fast food industry of United Kingdom gained from recession as it grew by 2% in terms of value in the year of 2009; (Johnson and Webb, 1993).There has also been a shift in the trend of consumers. They have now moved away from conventional restaurants and have chosen to go for fast food restaurants, given their disposable incomes. Restaurants that promise quick services are likely to do better than the ones that don't, with those consumers who spend less, (Olsen et al, 2000).

Given the immense opportunities that lie in the food service sector, we will be launching an Italian restaurant by the name of 'Grotto', meaning a small cave. The paper focuses on the business plan that will mention all aspects of our business.

Mission, vision, objectives, goals and core competencies

Our Mission Statement

Grotto's mission is to be number one Italian food serving family restaurant, offering affordable and high quality Italian food.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be the best Italian restaurant in urban UK.

Our Goal

Our goal is to offer our customers an Italian experience that is above their expectations. We intend to do this by focusing on cleanliness and quality. People who work with us are highly valued. We offer them a friendly environment that makes them want to work with us longer, and happily.

Our Objectives

Our objectives reflect our goals and mission statement. In short they remind us what we do. Our objectives are as follow:

Offer the highest quality of Italian experience in terms of food and service

Offer an environment where everyone can play his part as a team member, for achieving high standards

Offer a pace that is fit for families to visit

Offer the food at a price that is affordable

Establish and expand our reputation

To make sales worth 1 million dollars in the first year, with a growth of 10% each year.

Increase the number of customers every month

Strive to maintain a stable growth every month

Our core competency

Our core competency is our quality human resource. Our Human Resource has a deep understanding of organization they work in. They understand the value of offering quality food and service, as a key for making high profits. Our human resource comprises of highly experienced employees who are driven by motivation.

Issues involved in strategic planning

The planning function involves assessing the types of control methodologies, (Schmelzer and Olsen, 1994). Strategic planning involves making careful decisions regarding the employment of resources. We will be discussing three issues that we faced in regard to this. Strategic planning is based on the analysis, both internal and external. Throughout our planning we were faced with issues.
