Introduction

The conventional conservation and use of natural resources has offered to research for protection and control of hazards without regard to traditional disciplinary boundaries. Environmental management has offered to improve communication, form ideas of available practitioners from different backgrounds. It is the responsibility of humanity, as the principal user of nature, to ensure that its environmental impacts are compassionate rather than catastrophic. The environmental management aims to emphasize on understanding the development of the Environmental Management in all areas of business (including understanding of impetus for competitive advantage). Every business (small or large) has its impact on the environment. It is therefore, the responsibility of each and every Business owner or manager to ensure that whatever impact is raised through his level of business, its impact must be managed and minimised appropriately. This course work will describe Environmental Management System as a basic approach of managing environmental impacts of your business. Five procedures will be discussed to begin the implementation of the Environmental Management System. These procedures will be based on the international environmental standard ISO: 14001. The intention of ISO14001 is to provide organisation of any sector, size, and demographic location with the assistance and framework structure that will help prevent or reduce environmental impacts as a result of an organisations processes, products or service. However, these standards is voluntary, they are not there to enforce environmental laws on organisations or there to regulate their environmental activities (Welford & Gouldson, 1993).

An environmental management is a systematic approach adapted by every organisation to take the responsibility for managing the environmental impact of its activities. The use of natural resources, energy and waste are seriously linked with the successful management of environmental impacts. The successful management of environmental impacts will bring long term sustainability to the organization. Environmental management system provides best ways to plan and implement the measures for protecting the environment.
