CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction of the Research

Every organisation has human resource management to make sure that they manage their human resources in the best possible manner. One of the most important functions of the human resource department is the recruitment. Organizations all over the world keep searching for the best available talent all the time to ensure that they remain ahead in their respective fields. Therefore, the recruitment is one of the most important things in an organization, as this process of HRM makes the talented people a part of the organizational team. Attracting and recruiting talented people for the job, which fits their capabilities could become a sustainable competitive advantage for an organization (Pfeiffer 2002, 697).  This thesis will explore the importance of recruitment and selection from the perspective of HRM in an organization, with the case study of TESCO. TESCO is one of the most successful companies in UK and is known for its management policies.

1.2 Problem statement

With the ever-changing business environment and the increasing number of complexities in the global business environment, it has become very important for an organization to manage all its resources in the best possible manner, especially, human resources. This dissertation aims to explore the importance of recruitment and selection in an organization with the case study of TESCO.

1.3 Research questions

1. What is the concept of recruitment and selection in a modern day organization?

2. What role the does the recruitment and selection play in ensuring that the organization has the best human resource available?

3. How can the recruitment and selection become a source of competitive advantage for the organization?

1.4 Significance of the study

Management is necessary for any firm (Lewis 2009, 137); especially, the management of talent in the organization through recruitment. If any organisation has achieved dynamic success, it is more important for that organisation to sustain that success. Recruitment and selection cover a vast range of responsibilities, which are significantly important in running and maintaining an organisation.
