The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) that works under the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is the leading healthcare framework in the US. At present, out of 23.5 million, 7.9 million U.S. veterans are registered in the VA health system. Recently, there is an increased demand faced by VHA for healthcare services resulting in an increase in the cost of services. This raises the VA budget as well in order to meet such expenses.
The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has experienced major transformations over the past ten years becoming a quality-based integrated delivery system (Greenfield & Kaplan, 2009). Like any other health care organization, the VA has faced an increased demand for medical services causing a rapid expansion of its budget. Although the number of veterans has been falling (25 million), the VA budget has increased 40 percent in real terms with adjusted inflation. Lawmakers expanded the number of groups from seven to eight eligibility groups for medical services. The first enrollment period started in 1999 and nearly 4.5 million veterans enrolled. By 2004 the enrollment increased to 7.4 million.
Based on literature review, the VA estimate done on September 30, 2007, there were 23,532,000 living US military veterans. During this specific year, the department provided medical care to more than five million of these veterans and 400,000 other patients. Additionally, 2.9 million veterans enrolled in the VA system but did not seek medical services.
The VHA primary care settings have implemented many of the characteristics of the PCMH or PACT model in the primary care settings. Changes are made involving vital assessment, resources allocation, and shift of priorities, an attempt of pursuing a successful transformation of health care delivery. This will help the VA line up with the national health care reform initiatives. The VHA will be able to continue in a leadership position of health care delivery securing optimal, safe and effective health care management of veterans. The implementation of this innovation will increase accessibility of primary care to maintain, manage, prevent, and promote health care to the veterans
Company's Technological Advantages
VA today continues to be recognized for its leading role in the transformation of health care in the United States. The other industries and countries can replicate the innovations and models. The implementation of electronic health record (EHR), performance measurement and improvement have contributed to the veterans in receiving “the best care anywhere." Health information can be accessed at any VA health care provider throughout the United States. While health care costs continue to rise, Vist A is helping to control these costs, improve quality of care and prevent medication errors; while increasing safety and efficiency of hospitals and clinics. Another great advantage of using EHR is the prompt intervention for veterans suffering from mental illness, which are growing health problems and priorities in the VA health care system. VistA is very useful in providing medical services to women veterans. The estimated cost of maintaining the system is $ 87 per patient per year ...
